Ostrya virginiana

Ironwood

Ironwood is one of few superb upland understory trees with yellow fall color and leaves which persist through winter. Fruits look like hops, hence the other common name of “hop-hornbeam".

  • »  Tolerates shade very well
  • »  Interesting hop-like seeds in late summer, layered habit of growth, flaking bark
  • »  Very low maintenance, but somewhat slow growing
  • »  Serrated pointy leaves turn lemon yellow in fall

Underused small native woodland tree with exceptionally strong wood
